The vegetarian hundred

Folow up to the omnivores one hundred. Maybe I'll do the drinker's one hundred.

If you want to play along, here's how you do it: copy the list,including these instructions, and bold any items you have eaten and strikeout any you would never eat, and then post it to your blog.I'm going to add the following rule: italicize items you have made (orgrown) yourself. (Presumably, you've eaten those as well.)

Or just make notes, like I did.

The Vegetarian Hundred

1. Real macaroni and cheese, made from scratch and baked – sure.
2. Tabouleh – oh yes.
3. Freshly baked bread, straight from the oven (preferably with homemade strawberry jam) – yes to both.
4. Fresh figs – they are an Italo-American staple.
5. Fresh pomegranate – sure.
6. Indian dal of any sort – yep.
7. Imam bayildi – yes.
8. Pressed spiced Chinese tofu – oh yes.
9. Freshly made hummus – we make it all the time.
10. Tahini – yes.
11. Kimchi – love it, stinky goodness.
12. Miso – soup, etc.
13. Falafel – we usually have it once a week, with home-made hummus.
14. Potato and pea filled samosas – sure.
15. Homemade yogurt – oh yes.
16. Muhammara – yep.
17. Brie en croute – is it baked brie in puff pastry? Sure.
18. Spanikopita – it’s fun to say, and I love spinach.
19. Fresh, vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes – grew ‘em myself.
20. Insalata caprese – we call this sliced tomatoes with mozzarella and basil drizzled with olive oil, but, sure.
21. Stir-fried greens (gai lan, bok choi, pea shoots, kale, chard or collards) – what, no broccoli rabe?
22. Freshly made salsa – when we have chicken tacos, once a week or so.
23. Freshly made guacamole – all the time.
24. Creme brulee – we have two small torches, sure.
25. Fava beans – yes.
26. Chinese cold sesame peanut noodles – sure.
27. Fattoush – yep.
28. New potatoes – caboose? Of course.
29. Coleslaw – Coles Law – thinly sliced cabbage. I like lime cilantro coleslaw.
30. Ratatouille – started eating this long before the movie, like 40 years ago.
31. Baba ganoush – eggplant? Oh yes.
32. Winter squash – sure.
33. Roasted beets – I like the golden ones.
34. Baked sweet potatoes – awesome.
35. Plantains – starchy bananas? Sure.
36. Chocolate truffles – this is a veggie dish? I don’t think these are the truffles you are thinking of.
37. Garlic mashed potatoes – c’mon, seriously? It’s a restaurant cliché now.
38. Fresh water chestnuts – yep.
39. Steel cut oats – takes a long tome to cook, but a great breakfast for a 200K ride.
40. Quinoa – yes.
41. Grilled portabello mushrooms – on the grill.
42. Chipotle en adobo – sure.
43. Stone ground whole grain cornmeal – polenta by any other name?
44. Freshly made corn or wheat tortillas – in Mexico.
45. Frittata – mom made these for us when I was a kid, we still eat ‘em.
46. Basil pesto – we grow it then make it and freeze it.
47. Roasted garlic – there are two heads in my fridge right now. Spread on some crusty bread.
48. Raita of any type – yes.
49. Mango lassi – sure.
50. Jasmine rice (white or brown) – yep.
51. Thai vegetarian coconut milk curry – I like green, over #50.
52. Pumpkin in any form other than pie – sure. Soup?
53. Fresh apple pear or plum gallette – yes, of course.
54. Quince in any form – yep.
55. Escarole, endive or arugula – ska roll! Holiday soup? Rocket? Again, what, no broccoli rabe?56. Sprouts other than mung bean – radish sprouts rule.
57. Naturally brewed soy sauce – sure.
58. Dried shiitake mushrooms – soak ‘em first.
59. Unusually colored vegetables (purple cauliflower, blue potatoes, chocolate bell peppers…) – yep.
60. Fresh peach ice cream – made it myself.
61. Chevre – full of goaty goodness.
62. Medjool dates – yep.
63. Kheer – sure.
64. Flourless chocolate cake – yup.
65. Grilled corn on the cob – sweet!
66. Black bean (or any other bean) vegetarian chili – we make seven bean.
67. Tempeh – yup.
68. Seitan or wheat gluten – sure.
69. Gorgonzola or any other blue veined cheese – the funkier the better.
70. Sweet potato fries – yes, but also a bit of a cliché.
71. Homemade au gratin potatoes – mmmm, cheesy.
72. Cream of asparagus soup – sure.
73. Artichoke-Parmesan dip – yup.
74. Mushroom risotto – home made. Keep stirring.
75. Fermented black beans – natto? Love it.
76. Garlic scapes – I’m not sure what exactly this is??
77. Fresh new baby peas – yep.
78. Kalamata olives – sure.
79. Preserved lemons – yes.
80. Fried green tomatoes – of course.
81. Chinese scallion pancakes – yep, though the Korean BBQ places make something exactly like these.
82. Cheese soufflé – sure.
83. Fried apples – yes.
84. Homemade frijoles refritos – sittin’ here in Queens, eatin’ refried beans…
85. Pasta fagiole – I’m Italian, remember?
86. Macadamia nuts in any form – sure, right from Hawaii.
87. Paw paw in any form – yes.
88. Grilled cheese sandwich of any kind – with tomato, please.
89. Paneer cheese – yes.
90. Ma Po Tofu (vegetarian style–no pork!) – yup.
91. Fresh pasta in any form – home made pumpkin ravioli last time we made it.
92. Grilled leeks, scallions or ramps – si, si, si.
93. Green papaya salad – yes.
94. Baked grain and vegetable stuffed tomatoes – yes, and stuffed peppers, too.
95. Pickled ginger – gari, is that you?
96. Methi greens – yes.
97. Aloo paratha – yup.
98. Kedgeree (the original Indian version without the smoked fish, not the British version with fish) – yes.
99. Okra – gummy gumbo goodness.
100. Roasted brussels sprouts – we like to sautee ‘em with garlic and olive oil, no big surprise there, but yes.

My brother said: Garlic scapes are the curly tops of a garlic plant. I get them from the farm, usually early in the season.

Garlic scapes are sooooooo good! They're a staple of the local farmers' market in the spring and early summer.
